Scientist accused of hiding ties to the Chinese military taken into custody by the United States

A Chinese researcher accused of hiding his ties to the Chinese military over applications he filed for work in the United States was booked into a Northern California prison last Friday and is expected to appear before the federal court.

Sacramento County Jail records show that 37-year-old Juan Tang had been detained on behalf of federal authorities after being arrested by United States Marshals. It was not clear whether he had a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.

The Justice Department announced allegations against Tang and three other scientists living in the United States on Thursday, claiming to have lied about their status as members of the People's Liberation Army of China. Everyone has been charged with visa fraud.

Tang was the last of four to be arrested after the justice department accused the Chinese consulate in San Francisco of hosting a well-known fugitive.

The consulate did not immediately respond to Facebook emails and messages looking for comments and a telephone message could not be left.
